(Washington, D.C.) December 14, 2012 — When tragedy struck in Haiti in 2010, Jesuit Refugee Service/USA supporters responded swiftly and generously, contributing more than $1,890,000 to relief efforts.
Those funds have now been fully distributed or committed, providing emergency supplies, psychosocial support, education, potable drinking water, and much more. These programs are designed to reach beyond the momentary assistance and to provide lasting, life-giving solutions for Haitians.
This year, an urgent need developed halfway around the world as armed conflict in Syria has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes and seek refuge in other parts of Syria, or in neighboring countries.
Their needs are critical, and as winter approaches, support becomes increasingly a matter of life or death. JRS is on the ground in Syria and in neighboring countries, working with Syrians displaced by the conflict and also with refugees in this region from Iraq, Sudan, and Somalia who continue to need our support.
Generous financial assistance from the United States Jesuit Conference covers nearly all fundraising and management expenses for JRS/USA. This means that we are able to direct at least 93% of donations made by individuals to the programs that need them most, assisting refugees and forcibly displaced persons through service, advocacy, and educational outreach. The short video on this page offers a glimpse of the people who are touched by the donors who took action in response to the urgent situations in Haiti and Syria.
If there is a need, be it caused by natural disaster or violent conflict, JRS will be there, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. As you make your decisions about giving this year, please know that JRS/USA is committed to using our resources in the most responsible, efficient manner possible while making the greatest impact.by Clare Bonsignore, JRS/USA Development Director
