The Impact of Your Gift

Your gift makes a huge impact in the lives of the refugees and displaced people we serve.

The overhead and administrative costs of running the Jesuit Refugee Service/USA are fully subsidized through the generosity of the Jesuits. As a result, every penny you contribute goes directly to programs that help relieve the suffering of refugees worldwide.

For where your treasure is,
there also will be your heart.

Matthew 6:21

Where Your Gift Will Be Used

This year we are focusing on seven “hot spots” refugee issues worldwide. In each of these situations JRS teams have need of your financial support:

  • Kino Border Initiative — Support for the humanitarian care and feeding of returned migrants in the Nogales US/Mexico border, with particular emphasis on single mothers and their children. Hundreds of men and women migrants are returned each week form the US with no place to go for bed or a meal. Our work aims to feed daily on average 300 returned migrants and to prevent some of the returned vulnerable women from further becoming victims of human trafficking. For additional information about the Kino Border Project, see the Kino Border Initiative in the Programs page.
  • KBI in Arizona — JRS/USA has partnered with California Jesuit Province and the Diocese of Tucson to establish an outreach program for parishes in the Santa Clara Vicariate of the diocese as well as creating a center for college and high school students to spend time studying immigration issues.
  • Colombian Refugees— Decades of civil war have created nearly 4 million displaced people in Colombia and hundreds of thousands of refugees in neighboring countries. Many civilians have become victims of political assassinations, forced recruitment into armed groups, disappearances, abductions and other human rights abuses. In addition to general assistance programs, JRS/USA supports pastoral programs in Colombia, Venezuela and Panama for the spiritual care of these people.
  • Haiti/Dominican Republic— Many Haitians who dwell along the Haiti’s border with Dominican Republic are refugees and migrants who were expelled by Dominican officials during massive deportation campaigns in recent years.  This border population has great needs, stemming in part from the lack of potable water and food supplies in the region. JRS/USA provides help in digging wells and in the development of a farming project for self-sustenance in Haiti. JRS/USA also provides support for medical assistance to Haitian refugees, living in the Dominican Republic.
  • South Africa — JRS/USA supports the pastoral work of Fr. Gary Smith, S.J. along the northern border with Zimbabwe, where many refugees have gathered. The enormity of situation cannot be overemphasized due to the horrible living conditions that have developed in Zimbabwe.
  • Bhutanese in Nepal — More than 100,000 Bhutanese refugees have been languishing in camps within Nepal for 17 years while waiting to return home or be resettled with safety and dignity. JRS teams continue to provide formal education for nearly 40,000 children with a special focus on youngsters with disabilities.
  • Mira Loma — JRS/USA works in partnership with the California Jesuit Province and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to provide chaplains at this detention center.

Would you help alleviate the suffering of God's people
by making a tax-deductible donation today?

  • $25 to $40 per year will educate a primary grade student in Africa or Asia.
  • $45 per year pays registration fees for Bhutanese refugee students in a secondary school in Nepal.
  • $90 will buy a stretcher for one of our infirmaries in Congo.
  • $180 will purchase 50 blankets for our urban refugee project in Nairobi.
  • $700 per year will train a teacher in the Ivory Coast.
