The Impact of Your Gift

Your gift makes a huge impact in the lives of the refugees and displaced people we serve.

The overhead and administrative costs of running the Jesuit Refugee Service/USA are fully subsidized through the generosity of the Jesuits. As a result, every penny you contribute goes directly to programs that help relieve the suffering of refugees worldwide.

Where Your Gift Will Be Used

JRS/USA supports both domestic and international projects. A thorough review of this support may be seen on the JRS International Programs page. This year we are focusing on six international “hot spots” where refugees need our help and one new domestic program on the Mexico-Arizona border. In each of these situations JRS teams have need of your financial support:

  • Kino Border Initiative — A bi-national apostolic program that addresses the contentious issue of migration on both sides of the Arizona—Mexico border. The program as a whole contains educational and formational components, socio-pastoral outreach, research and advocacy along the border. JRS/USA’s major contribution to this effort will be the support of a community-based welcoming center for deported Mexicans and the development of a small shelter for unaccompanied migrant women who are particularly vulnerable to exploitation in Nogales, Mexico. Partners in this project include the Diocese of Tucson, the Archdiocese of Hermosillo, the Missionary Sisters of the Eucharist, and the California and the Mexican Provinces of the Society of Jesus. Both the welcoming center and the women’s shelter in Mexico will serve as the grassroots, service-oriented foundation for the educational, formational and advocacy components of the program in Arizona. For additional information about the Kino Border Project, see the Kino Border Initiative in the Programs page.
  • West Africa — Teacher training scholarships in Northern Ivory Coast. The ruinous effects of the late 2002-2003 war has left the northern Ivory Coast basic education structures in a chaos. For a better tomorrow, the JRS wants to help to strengthen the capacity of those teachers who have dedicated themselves to tutoring the displaced pupils during the crisis. In supporting deserving teachers in need to continue their studies, JRS will enable them to be in a better position to implement their teaching ministry.
  • Colombia — Decades of civil conflicts have created hundreds of thousands of displaced people and refugees in neighboring countries. Many civilians have become victims of murder, disappearances, abductions and other human rights abuses. In addition to general assistance programs, JRS provides education projects for young people who are vulnerable to recruitment into armed groups, as well as peace education and child welfare groups for adults.
  • Haiti — Haitians who dwell along the border with Dominican Republic have great needs, from the lack of potable water to limited access to education and educational materials. JRS provides help in digging wells and in the development of an educational media center in the northeastern part of the country.
  • South Africa — Nearly 5.5 million people are afflicted with HIV/AIDS in South Africa, many of whom are refugees. JRS/South Africa seeks to provide holistic home care in the Johannesburg area for 60 individuals who are living with HIV/AIDS or other terminal illnesses.
  • Bhutanese in Nepal — More than 100,000 Bhutanese refugees have been languishing in inside Nepal for 14 years while waiting to return home with safety and dignity. JRS teams continue to provide formal education for nearly 40,000 children with a special focus on youngsters with disabilities.
  • East Timor — Between 100,000 and 200,000 people have been displaced by civil war in this country. JRS seeks to provide community services to 10,000 IDPs in the Dili area of East Timor, as well as developing awareness for the rights of these people among other local agencies and the Catholic Church.

Would you help alleviate the suffering of God's people by making a tax-deductible donation today?
