Happy Feast of Saint Ignatius From JRS/USA

Happy Feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola from all of us at the Jesuit Refugee Service/USA!

As we celebrate the life and works of the founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), we are reminded of his call to radically impact the world around us. St. Ignatius in his letters to Jesuits participating in missions would often end with the expression ite, inflammate omnia—“go, set the world on fire.” For those of us inspired by St. Ignatius – Jesuit fathers and brothers, Jesuit school students and graduates, lay employees and volunteers, supporters, admirers, followers of the Spiritual Exercises– this call means we must go out into the world and be companions to those in the greatest need for the greater glory of God.

Today, more than ever, as conflict, war, and famine have displaced more than 65 million people throughout the globe, the greatest need is with refugees.

As Pope Francis put it:

“You have been invited to become ‘companions of Jesus’ and, with Saint Ignatius Loyola as your guide, you have been sent into the world to be women and men for and with others.  At this place and time in history, there is great need for men and women who hear the cry of the poor and respond with mercy and generosity … It will help you to recall your Ignatian roots as you address the problems experienced by refugees.  You must offer the Lord “all your liberty, your memory, your understanding and your entire will” as you continue to understand the causes of forced migration and serve refugees in your countries.”

We can all  respond to St. Ignatius’s call to “set the world on fire” as companions of refugees:
