Coping During Displacement: Integrating MHPSS in Refugee Assistance Programs

28 March 2023|Policy and Advocacy

In Romania, JRS utilized a variety of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) strategies to support refugees coming from Ukraine during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. One of those specific tools used was physical activity in the form of dance.

At JRS/USA, we recognize the immense challenges faced by refugees and displaced individuals. We understand that displacement can cause profound trauma, which can have long-lasting effects on mental and emotional health. That’s why we believe it’s crucial to integrate Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) into our refugee assistance programs.

The 2023 report “Coping During Displacement: Integrating MHPSS in Refugee Assistance Programs” highlights the importance of MHPSS in supporting refugees and displaced persons. The report emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to MHPSS that considers the unique experiences of each individual. We believe that by integrating MHPSS into our programs, we can help refugees build resilience and cope with the challenges of displacement.

As an organizational priority, we are committed to providing comprehensive support to refugees and displaced individuals. We believe that by integrating MHPSS into our programs, we can address the complex mental health needs of refugees and help them lead fulfilling lives. We understand that displacement is not just a physical experience but also an emotional and psychological one. By prioritizing MHPSS, we aim to support refugees in their journey towards healing and building a better future. You can help by taking action to urge your Senators and Representatives to cosponsor the MINDS Act, to ensure that the U.S. does everything in its power to improve global mental health outcomes for the most vulnerable.
