Caminar Contigo
Binational Border Response Program
Following the January 20, 2025 inauguration of the Trump administration, additional immigration enforcement measures—including a national emergency declaration, reinstatement of the “Remain in Mexico” policy (MPP), termination of categorical parole programs, and suspension of the CBP One app—have further tightened border access.
Despite these constraints, JRS/USA and JRS Mexico remain on the ground in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas—accompanying migrants and asylum seekers who are unable to cross but still urgently need support.
Our Ongoing Commitment
Initiated in 2021, the Caminar Contigo (“Walk With You”) program was created to address the pressing needs of refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced individuals along our shared border. This binational initiative focuses on:
-
Alleviating suffering by meeting immediate humanitarian needs.
-
Strengthening mental health and psychosocial well-being (MHPSS) to help migrants cope with trauma and uncertainty.
-
Safeguarding legal rights through accompaniment, orientation, and referrals.
Our mission is rooted in solidarity—walking alongside people on their journey toward safety and stability.
What We’ve Achieved Since 2021
Through Caminar Contigo, we have:
-
Provided MHPSS support through individual counseling, group sessions, and community activities.
-
Accompanied people to immigration court hearings in El Paso, ensuring they understood their rights and the legal process.
-
Delivered legal orientations and rights education to asylum seekers in shelters and community centers
-
Distributed thousands of essential items—including hygiene kits, warm clothing, and baby supplies—to meet immediate needs.
-
Strengthened partnerships with 15+ local organizations, enabling coordinated referrals for shelter, food, and medical care.
Our Work Today
Even with current restrictions on crossings, Caminar Contigo continues to:
-
Offer trauma-informed MHPSS services to those stranded in limbo at the border.
-
Accompany migrants through complex legal processes, including cross-border case coordination when possible.
-
Provide humanitarian aid and referrals to ensure no one is left without support in this challenging environment.
