New White House Announcement on Refugee Admissions Demonstrates Positive Step Forward

03 May 2021

Jesuit Refugee Service/USA commends the Biden Administration for its decision to set an official target of 62,500 refugee admissions for the current Fiscal Year. This important step forward will bring hope to thousands of refugees waiting for a new start in the United States.

“We applaud President Biden for following through on his commitment to increase refugee admissions,” said Joan Rosenhauer, Executive Director. “This will serve as a critical down payment for increasing the refugee admissions cap to 125,000 refugees in Fiscal Year 2022.”

As the world witnesses an historic refugee crisis with the highest levels of global displacement on record, the US Refugee Admissions program is a critical way to protect some of the most vulnerable refugees who face specific or urgent protection risks. JRS/USA looks forward to continuing to work with the Biden Administration and Congress to ensure that the US remains a global leader in refugee resettlement.
