26 September 2024|JRS/LAC, JRS/USA, Encuentros, SJM/Bolivia, SJM/Peru, & SJMR/Brazil |Policy and Advocacy|Institutional Resources, JRS Publications

In the first half of 2024, forced migration in the Americas remains a complex and multi-causal phenomenon. The reasons that drive people to migrate and seek protection remain, and control measures fail to adequately and comprehensively address and accompany the flow of people, generating what we know as “protection gaps.”

This report analyzes the main trends in forced migration in the region between December 2023 and May 2024. It gathers perspectives from the offices of the Jesuit Migrant Service (JMS) in Bolivia, Peru; the Jesuit Migrant and Refugee Service (JRS) in Brazil; and the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and the United States. It focuses on:

    • People and communities made invisible in migration.
    • The risks on migration routes.
    • Migration policies and their impact on the militarization and securitization of borders.
    • Gray areas in protection measures.
    • Migration processes of girls, boys and adolescents, both accompanied and unaccompanied.
    • Situations of indigenous communities.
    • Opportunities for reconciliation and hospitality between migrant and host communities.
    • A special chapter on the situation in the Darien Gap.

We invite you to read and share this report to broaden perspectives and add voices in favor of the comprehensive protection of refugees, migrants and displaced persons.
