A Novena to Renew Our Asylum Promises

05 May 2023

In solidarity with Jesuit ministries on the border, please begin this prayer individually or with your community on Sunday, May 7th. This Novena will conclude on May 15th, but we encourage continued prayers for the renewal of our asylum promise.

On May 11, 2023, the U.S. government will end the use of Title 42, which restricts individuals and families from seeking asylum at the U.S. border during a public health emergency. In place of Title 42, the Biden-Harris Administration has proposed new actions that will continue to restrict access to asylum, even as many individuals and families continue to flee from violence and persecution and seek refuge in the U.S.

As restrictions on asylum remain, we invite you to join in this novena to pray for a renewal of our asylum promises. We pray with the hope that the U.S. Government will remember its previous commitments to asylum seekers and will work to restore the right to seek asylum.

Just as we renew our baptismal promises at the EasterVigil, so we call on our country and countries around the world to renew their asylum promises to offer respite to those fleeing situations of violence. In solidarity with Jesuit ministries on the border, please begin this prayer individually or with your community on Sunday, May 7. While this novena will conclude on Monday, May 15, please continue to pray for this renewal of our asylum promises.
