Transforming Lives: Samar’s Journey from Hardship to Hope in Lebanon
27 February 2024|JRS Lebanon - Robert Gemayel
In a world plagued by conflicts and hardships, there are countless stories of resilience and hope. One such story revolves around Samar*, a young girl who, along with her family, found solace and support through JRS Lebanon.
Samar’s journey, marred by political unrest and medical challenges, is a testament to the power of compassion and the impact organizations like JRS can have on the lives of vulnerable individuals.
A Journey Filled with Struggles
Samar’s family fled their home in Hasaka, Syria in 2014 to escape the clutches of the Syrian regime. The family’s decision was driven by the father’s opposition to the regime and his evasion of military service.
They sought refuge in Lebanon, hoping for a better life. The family, however, encountered various challenges along the way. Samar’s mother gave birth to her elder brother, Omar, in 2015 when the family was facing economic and social difficulties as they were trying to rebuild their lives in a new country.
It was during this time that Samar’s mother learned about the work of JRS Lebanon through the local community. She sought assistance for Omar, who was struggling with enuresis. With the intervention of a social worker and the support of dedicated tutors, Omar was able to overcome his problem. However, his progress was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent shift to online learning.
Life during the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the already dire circumstances faced by Samar’s family. The absence of financial assistance from humanitarian organizations and the escalating living costs became an overwhelming burden to have a decent life.
Adding to their difficulties, Samar’s birth meant additional expenses, further stretching the family’s limited resources. At the time, Lebanon’s economic and financial crisis was at its peak, and most infant necessities, such as milk, diapers, and medicine, were either unavailable or accessible in restricted quantities at exorbitant prices.
Faced with the severe overall circumstances and knowing that the father’s arrest by Syrian border police was inevitable, the family made the painful decision to return to Syria in quest of refuge with their remaining siblings.
“My husband was detained, and as a person in the opposition and wanted by the Syrian regime, he disappeared, and I no longer knew anything about him,” she explained.
The father’s subsequent detention forced Samar’s mother to undertake the risky journey back to Lebanon with her children, including Samar, via illegal borders.
Samar’s Health Struggles
Upon their return to Lebanon, Samar’s family found themselves in distressing circumstances, sharing a room with other displaced individuals in Bourj Hammoud area, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Lebanon.
In their time of need, JRS Lebanon extended a helping hand, providing food, hygiene kits, and winter supplies for Samar and her siblings.
But the hardships continued to mount as Samar fell ill with a high fever at the age of one and a half. The family’s dire circumstances prevented Samar’s mother from seeking immediate medical attention. The little girl’s condition worsened, and she began experiencing uncontrolled seizures until she was diagnosed with semi-kidney failure.
She expressed, “This is where my daughter and I embarked on our harrowing journey. During my month-and-a-half-long hospital stay, my son wandered from one sympathetic family to another. He would sometimes inform me that he was hungry and not receiving food. My constant anguish revolved around my hungry son and my sick daughter, whose cries of pain echoed through the hospital walls.”
Neglect and the improper use of antibiotics and medication further compromised her health and weakened her immune system. Samar endured years of suffering due to her critical medical condition.
Finding Support through JRS Lebanon
Throughout this arduous journey, JRS Lebanon provided crucial support and connected her family with resources, including tests, medication, and medical professionals.
Samar underwent surgery and now faces regular tests, X-rays, and scans. Her left kidney functionsa at only 15% capacity and her right kidney at a mere 35%, she continues to fight with severe immunodeficiency.
Moreover, her health struggles took a toll on her mental well-being, leading to shyness, depression, and low self-esteem. She felt isolated and different from her peers, unable to participate in certain physical activities and enjoy her favorite treats.
Recognizing the need for an inclusive education that could address her medical condition and enhance her overall well-being, JRS Lebanon provided Samar with a safe place at the educational centre in Bourj Hammoud.
A Gateway to a Brighter Future
Enrolling at the educational center marked a turning point in Samar’s life. The 6-year-old girl regained her smile, developed self-confidence, and embraced a safe environment where her medical condition was understood and accommodated. She made friends, actively participated in school activities, and found joy and motivation in her studies.
The family, unable to afford private school education, was grateful for the free education and progressive services provided by JRS Lebanon.
Samar’s mother expressed her deep gratitude, acknowledging the organization’s pivotal role in saving her daughter from despair. “The timely intervention of JRS Lebanon brought Samar back to life, igniting a sense of joy and enthusiasm within her”, she said.
Samar’s brother, Omar, also received support from JRS Lebanon, before the pandemic, which helped him overcome his enuresis and excel in the English language.
Furthermore, recently, a group of individuals in Syria successfully orchestrated the father’s escape from Syrian prisons, enabling him to reunite with his family in Lebanon. However, it is now impossible for them to return to Syria. As a result, the family made arrangements to find shelter in Bourj Hammoud area.
Educators’ Perspective
Samar’s tutors praised her exceptional character and determination. The English tutor, Noura Alawiyeh, commended Samar’s transformation from a shy student to an active participant in the classroom.
“Upon being informed about Samar’s situation, we made every effort to provide her with attentive care, encourage her active involvement, and facilitate the development of friendships,” Ms. Alawiyeh commented.
As a result, Samar blossomed into a sociable individual, eagerly participating in all activities. Her intelligence and courtesy shone through, and remarkable progress was evident across her socioemotional, physical, and academic realms, reflecting the care and support she received.
Mary Younes, Samar’s Arabic tutor, commended her exceptional qualities, highlighting her kindness, politeness, cleanliness, and organizational skills. “Samar demonstrated commitment to her schoolwork, adhered to rules, and exhibited remarkable academic progress,” Ms. Younes explained.
A Glimpse into Samar’s Dreams
Despite her challenging circumstances, Samar dreams of becoming a doctor. JRS Lebanon unwavering support has provided her with hope and the belief that she can shape a brighter future for herself.
Samar’s journey from hardship to hope is a monument to the human spirit’s resilience and strength. It showcases the transformative power that organizations like JRS Lebanon can have in providing holistic support to refugees and their families. Through education, medical assistance, and compassionate care, Samar was able to overcome immense hurdles and find a renewed sense of purpose and joy.
Her story inspires others and reminds all of us of the importance of compassion and the impact JRS Lebanon have on vulnerable communities in times of crisis. Samar’s journey is a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, there is always a flicker of light waiting to guide us towards a better future.
