Jesuit Refugee Service Calls for De-escalation and Protection of Civilians Amid Rising Global Tensions
Washington, D.C. In the face of escalating rhetoric and the threat of expanded conflict, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) warns of the devastating human consequences of war and urges global leaders to pursue peace.
As Pope Leo XIV recently emphasized, world leaders must “look for an off-ramp” and “come back to the table, to dialogue.” The path of violence only deepens suffering, fuels displacement, and destroys families.
At JRS, we witness every day the devastating impact of conflict on communities—particularly those who are vulnerable, isolated, and persecuted. Grounded in Catholic social teaching, we reaffirm the inherent dignity of every human person and echo the call to build lasting peace through diplomacy rather than lethal force.
“Jesus is the King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war,” Pope Leo said. “No one can invoke faith to justify violence.”
JRS calls on leaders to prioritize diplomacy, protect civilians, and work toward solutions that uphold human dignity and prevent further violence and displacement.
