The “Festival of Encounter,” in Amman, Jordan, initiated in 2022, has rapidly evolved into a significant cultural event that celebrates the rich diversity of refugee communities. This festival, part of JRS Jordan’s Peace-Building and Social Cohesion Program and held in conjunction with World Refugee Day in June, amplifies the voices of refugees and vulnerable groups, promoting empathy and understanding through the arts, music, and storytelling.
The inaugural festival was a landmark event in JRS Jordan’s efforts to build bridges of acceptance and solidarity. It brought together various cultural groups, providing a platform to dismantle barriers and create connections. The success of this first event laid the groundwork for the festival’s continued growth and impact.
The festival’s bazaar of handmade products once again provided refugee artisans with an opportunity to display their crafts and earn an income. This year’s bazaar, building on the success of previous years, featured an even wider variety of items, allowing attendees to support the artisans and take home pieces of their cultural heritage.
Music and performance were central to the festival’s success, with eight music groups and 31 performers taking the stage in 2024. These performances, representing a wide range of cultural traditions, were a powerful expression of identity and pride, captivating the audience and highlighting the vibrant cultural tapestry that refugees bring to Jordan.
Traditional clothing and storytelling continued to be important elements of the festival. Refugees proudly displayed their traditional garments and shared personal stories, offering insights into their experiences and the resilience they have shown in rebuilding their lives and helping deepen connections.
The 2024 festival’s success was made possible by the dedication of 65 volunteers who ensured it ran smoothly and that all attendees felt welcomed and included. The spirit of volunteerism, evident since the first festival, remains a cornerstone of the event, contributing to its warm and inclusive atmosphere.
The “Festival of Encounter” has become more than just a celebration; it is a beloved event highlighting the invaluable contributions of refugees to Jordanian society. JRS Jordan looks forward to continuing to provide this platform for cultural exchange and understanding, helping create a more inclusive and compassionate society where all voices are heard and valued.
