Accompaniment at the U.S. – Mexico Border: Conditions Report & Policy Recommendations

September 2023

The current situation at the U.S. – Mexico border is concerning. Restrictive U.S. asylum policies continue to exacerbate protection challenges in Mexico as individuals and families await the opportunity to apply for asylum in the U.S.

JRS Mexico and JRS/USA accompany asylum seekers on both sides of the border. Present in Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, JRS provides legal, psychosocial, and accompaniment services to ensure that individuals and families journeying to the border are welcomed with dignity and treated with respect.

In this report, with information sourced from interviews and visits to shelters in Ciudad Juárez and El Paso in summer 2023, JRS/USA and JRS Mexico present a snapshot of current conditions in Ciudad Juárez and El Paso and how U.S. policies adversely impact protection, mental health, and public health challenges.
