Take Action to Protect JRS/USA

H.R. 9495 builds on provisions in previous legislation, H.R. 6408, empowering the Secretary of the Treasury to designate charitable organizations “terrorist-supporting organizations” and revoke their tax-exempt status with minimal due process. It would allow the Secretary to do this without disclosing the evidence or rationale behind the decision and would place the burden of proof on the organization to disprove the allegations.

A nonprofit could be helping people in a country with a corrupt government and on that basis alone, be deemed a “terrorist-supporting organization.” The potential for overreach, subjective application, and abuse of this authority is enormous.

While the legislation did pass the House, it’s important to note that significant movement occurred – initial support from over 50 Democrats dropped to just 15. This underscores how vital it is for elected officials to hear from their constituents and to become more educated on critical issues. Your voice matters, and continued advocacy can make a difference.

Please consider sending a message to your Senators urging them to oppose this harmful bill.

A vital part of Jesuit Refugee Service’s mission is to defend the rights of refugees and migrants throughout the world. JRS/USA  advocates for just and generous policies and programs so people made vulnerable by forcible displacement can receive support and protection, and so a durable solution to their plight can be achieved.
