From a computer literacy program in South Sudan to a kindergarten graduation ceremony in Iraq, teachers in JRS-operated schools around the globe work to make education accessible to refugees and other forcibly displaced people. On World Teachers’ Day, we take a moment to recognize the commitment of these teachers as they work towards advancing lifelong opportunities for all.In Baalbek,  a young boy has turned into an inventor, creating tools from materials otherwise put in the garbage. Some of his inventions include “a floor-cleaning robot, a cardboard car for waste sorting, and a battery-operated windmill.”

With support and enthusiasm from his teachers and tutors, the student has thrived. “Whenever he heard a word of admiration and praise from his tutors, he would return home full of confidence and new ideas that he seeks to implement,” his mother said.

In Chad, JRS is committed to helping young women and girls expand their literacy skills. Once the school day ends, , 100 young women and girls ages 12 to 25 years old participate in an evening program that encourages them to develop and practice their literacy skills

This past May, 139 kindergarten students graduated from the JRS Arrupe Kindergarten in Sharya, Duhok governorate, Iraq. Teachers at this school not only enriched the students’ educational experiences but provided extracurricular activities as well.In South Sudan, teachers at the JRS Maban Computer Course began training 117 men and women in January 2022. These students are now adept at ICDL computer essentials and the Microsoft Suite. Some who were already well versed in basic computer programs got to take advanced classes to further their skills.

Jesuit Refugee Service understands that education is a life-saving intervention. Unfortunately, there is a significant educational gap between refugee children and their peers. It is vital that accessibility to education and support for educators increases worldwide.  We encourage you to learn more about JRS Education programs, today!
